I just came across the new video for Angus and Julia Stone’s ‘Hold On’. Directed by Kiku Ohe, it’s quite a beautiful clip that captures the stark emotional levels of the song.
Although I’ve never been particularly obsessed with Angus and Julia Stone, I really do enjoy their music. I went to see them play at Manchester’s Ruby Lounge back in April, and I was suitably impressed. Julia especially blew me away. She exuded an effortless talent that ranged from her perfect, haunting vocals to her mastery of several instruments. Whilst Angus also has a lovely voice, the tracks where Julia takes the lead have always struck a deeper chord for me. I love the way ‘Hold On’ creeps and grows, whilst managing to keep you enthralled.
The band are coming back to the UK at the end of the year, catch them at the following dates:
Dec 4th – St. George’s Church, Brighton
Dec 5th – The Wardrobe, Leeds
Dec 6th – Tripod, Dublin
Dec 7th – Oran Mor, Glasgow
Dec 9th – Royal Festival Hall, London
Dec 10th – Princess Pavillion, Falmouth
Dec 11th – Trinity Centre, Bristol

As of about a week ago, I was completely unaware of the existence of Australian brother and sister duo Angus and Julia Stone. They had honestly never entered into my consciousness. I know this for a fact….I definitely would have remembered. Since the first listen their music has captivated me. It seems I’m very late to the game on this one, as their WIkipedia page informs me that not only have they been to the UK several times, Fran Healy was involved with the recording of their second EP as well as their debut album ‘A Book Like This’. They have supported The Magic Numbers and Martha Wainwright in the UK, and have received much support in their own country, especially from Triple J with many of their songs featuring in the Hottest 100.
So basically I’m not reporting anything new. Except that my favourite track of theirs, ‘And The Boys’, is their newest, and was premiered on Triple J itself on November 18th. The duo announced their forthcoming album is called Down The Way, and is set to be released March 2010.
‘And The Boys’ is a fantastic single, with Julia’s voice managing to sound both fragile and strong at the same time. Their lyrics are always emotive and powerful :
And I could tell you that I wont hurt you this time / But it’s just safer to keep you in this heart of mine
There’s also a very descriptive element to their songs, here in particular. As the song builds I cannot help but find my mind filled with imagery of a gold tinged world where everything swirls and moves delicately. But maybe that’s just me. Either way, it’s a beautiful track, and I am very happy now that Angus and Julia are part of my musical life (thank you to the friend responsible for the introduction…and thank you for probably being the only person to read this!).
