MEN – Talk About Body

MEN’s debut album Talk About Body was released this week. The group consist of Le Tigre’s JD Samson, Michael O’Neill of Ladybug Transistor, and Ginger Brooks Takahashi of artist collective LTTR. They are an electronic outfit, but their bio states that they speak “to issues such as wartime economies, sexual compromise, and demanding liberties through lyrical content and an exciting stage show”. A little deep for dance music? Not really, it’s only if you stop and pay particular attention to the lyrics that you become aware of the deeper sentiments. Which is quite refreshing; it adds a deeper layer to a genre that can be nothing but sounds to dance to.
In this case, they are highly enjoyable sounds. Highlights come in the form of ‘Who Am I To Feel So Free’, ‘Simultaneously’, and previous single ‘Off Our Backs’ (the video for which you can view below). The vocals are very often anthemic: chants of “Boom, boom, boom” and “Who am I to feel so free? Who am I?” pumping their way into your head, whilst the beats and guitars used pulse and grind along. It’s a pop-tinged record with a dirty edge; a dance record that makes you question whilst you rock out. It’s fun, fresh, and a highly recommended listen. (Which handily is something you can do here thanks to Spinner)
