Lisa Mitchell – Oh! Hark!

I love Radio1 but it isn’t very often they play something I haven’t heard before. So when Fearne Cotton played Lisa Mitchell as part of the Music Generator feature, I was pleasantly surprised. Surprised not only that I hadn’t heard it before, but because it was a bright and refreshing sound, especially compared to the UK ‘urban’ sound that has become such a permanent feature of radio play (something that has led to an incalculable decrease in my radio listening).
Lisa was born in Canterbury but moved to Australia at the age of 3. She has actually been around the music scene for a while, having featured in Australian Idol back in 2006. The song played by Fearne, Oh! Hark!, is taken from her first studio album Wonder which was released back in July of last year. Her vocals are enchanting and fresh, quite reminiscent of Julia Stone in fact (is it an Australian thing??). At just 19, Lisa already has several accomplishments under her belt: finishing 6th on Idol; performing a live MySpace gig that attracted 10,000 viewers; receiving 3 ARIA nominations for Wonder; providing support for Jason Mraz, Ben Lee and Newton Faulkner amongst other artists. This last point interests me the most, Brandi Carlile provided support for Faulkner on his last tour, it seems he (or his management) has quite a skill for choosing talented acts! For someone so young, Lisa’s music has an impressive depth and maturity to it, and I think it’s safe to say we can expect her success to continue in the future.
Lisa starts a tour of the UK tomorrow, dates can be found on her UK website here.
