Beast Make Bomb

June 21st, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Beast Make Bomb are a four-piece from Brooklyn who describe their music as garage/rock/punk. Tracks like ’1, 2, 3, 4′ and ‘Rough It Out’ fit this description, with fast drums and guitar riffs to match. However there’s definitely a pop melodic-ness to their songs, and tracks like ‘Coney Island’ will probably remind you of Best Coast, with a more cathartic approach and vocals that roll rather than attack. These 3 tracks are found on the Sourpuss EP, the older Skinny Legs EP is equally as enjoyable. Both are available for free via their Bandcamp.

Lykke Li – Get Some

October 25th, 2010 § Leave a Comment

Everyone’s talking about this new Lykke Li track. Firstly, because it’s the first new material from her in a while, secondly because she’s giving it away for free, and thirdly because it’s BLOODY GREAT. It’s alternative pop at it’s best, dark beats and instrumentation that pop and break into a shimmery, sparkling chorus. Echoing that sentiment, the accompanying video is a dark yet glittering affair. Watch it below, and then download the track for the small price of an email address here. You can also listen to the b-side, ‘Paris Blue’, here. This is more sombre affair, with a focus on vocals that chill and capture as Lykke sings of under-appreciating a city (or perhaps a person) she has overlooked. After a few listens this one crawled its way into my subconscious.

Women’s new album Public Strain is set to be released August 23rd here in the UK (September 28th in Canada & the U.S.). The band are giving away a track taken from it for free, go to here to read more about the album (and download ‘Eyesore’ at the bottom of the page).

Women are adding more fuel to my ‘I love Canadian bands’ fire. It’s a very big fire by this point.

Cut Copy – Where I’m Going

July 17th, 2010 § Leave a Comment

Cut Copy’s In Ghost Colours was one of my favourite albums of 2008, so I’m more than happy to see them return with new material. The band are working on an as yet untitled third album, and are giving away new track ‘Where I’m Going’ for free via their official site. It’s an upbeat, slightly psychedelic, slightly Beach Boys-like three and a half minutes of a jam, with breezy harmonies and summery guitar riffs. Perfect for your summer days (even if like me, you have to close your eyes and imagine the hot weather).

I heart Cut Copy!

Herzog are my favourite artist of the week. Although ‘they’ are actually just musician Nick Tolar (with Dave McHenry, Brian Hill, Dan Price and Dave Rich currently joining him for live shows). He comes from Cleveland, Ohio, and recently released a split single with Yuck on Transparent Records, who are now releasing Herzog’s debut album Search. Physical copies are available from August 12th via Pure Groove (pre-order here), with the digital version available to buy here on Bandcamp. You can stream it via the Soundcloud player below:

I’m becoming a bigger fan of Tennis by the day, their songs instill in me a feeling of tranquility and lucidity, something I crave in these troubled times!

Marina & the diamonds – I Am Not A Robot (CLOCK OPERA REMIX)

April 26th, 2010 § Leave a Comment

The day has finally come. Marina & the diamonds’ ‘I Am Not A Robot’ gets it re-release today, along with an amazing remix package. Which includes the long awaited, long overdue, much hyped, Clock Opera remix. Was it worth the wait?

For the first minute of the track I didn’t think so. But then I realised that Clock Opera have not only reworked the music, adding soaring strings and pulsing piano parts, they’ve taken Marina’s vocals and spliced them to create new lyrics altogether. “Our love faded / Our love faded.” Incredible work from Clock Opera, I can guarantee that you’ll have this one on repeat, and have that line stuck in your head, for a long time.
