[Music Video] Marina & the diamonds – Radioactive

August 22nd, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Marina & the diamonds just premiered her new single ‘Radioactive’ on Radio 1, and the accompanying video on her official site.

Marina had already said this single would be different to her previous material, and well…it is. It’s electro-pop at it’s best, and has much more of a dance feel than anything on The Family Jewels. In true Marina style though, the lyrics reference heartbreak and emotional turmoil…perfect.

Memory Tapes – Yes I Know (Music Video)

June 8th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Memory Tapes’ second album Player Piano is set to be released in just a few weeks on July 4th. Having absolutely adored debut album Seek Magic (and being lucky enough to attend Dayve Hawk’s first live gig as Memory Tapes) I am excitedly awaiting this new release. To tide us all over until then, here’s the new video for a track taken from Player Piano entitled ‘Yes I Know’.

Beautiful yet eerie, the video will hold you captivated throughout. The scenes takes in misty street vistas and a man who disappears right before your eyes. The rolling camera work evokes the sense that you’re in someone else’s head, taking a trip with them as they travel through streets and towns. The last scene, where a flock of birds spell out the word ‘Gone’ as the disappearing man vanishes completely, is stunningly beautiful. Highly impressive work from director Eric Epstein and director of photography Aaron Epstein.

Robyn – Call Your Girlfriend (Music Video)

June 2nd, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Robyn just released the video for the latest single from Body Talk, ‘Call Your Girlfriend’. It’s simple yet fantastic, showcasing Robyn’s enviable dance skills as she throws herself around an empty warehouse that fills with lights, transforming a dull empty space into the electric atmosphere that Robyn creates at every one of her shows. It’s one shot, all the way through, a 03:31 slice of energy and passion.

Beyoncé – Run The World (Girls) [Music Video]

Anyone uttering criticisms of this video clearly has neither eyes in their head nor blood in their veins.

(P.S. Criticisms of use of animals could possibly be allowed, although I’m sure B-town treated them lovingly)

Video Villain – Fearless

March 14th, 2011 § Leave a Comment

If there’s one good thing about my quest to carve out a musical related career (a quest that is otherwise depressing, disheartening and bankrupting) it’s that I’m hungrier than ever to hear new music. Researching companies leads me to all kinds of new sounds, as I try to familiarise myself with the bands that I one day hope to be working with (a girl can but dream). Case in point: today I applied for work experience at a PR company and ended up falling slightly in love with a track by a band called Video Villains.

Video Villain’s MySpace describes them as ‘Club/Industrial/Punk’, but honestly I think this is downright dirty pop music. It’s a heavy, gritty pop, with elements of all the things they label themselves as, but with killer chant-like vocals and drums that could have been taken straight from Britney’s (amazing) single ‘Circus’. Take that song, mix with a little Daft Punk, a little Shiny Toy Guns (circa We Are Pilots), and you have ‘Fearless’. Listen below, the track is available to buy on iTunes here. You can also watch the pretty mental video below, it reminds me of True Blood when that hot mental lady starting possessing everyone….

Jessie and Sampha have also put together this Valentine’s mix for The Fader, featuring tracks from Bill Withers, Royksopp, Actress and N.E.R.D. These two have MADE my February 14th!! Download the mixtape below.

MEN – Who Am I (Music Video)

I recently recommended MEN’s album Talk About Body, below you can see the new video for ‘Who Am I’, one of my favourite tracks from the record. It’s FUNNY, I expect lolfaces to be provoked. And if you don’t know what LOLFACE is, get out of my kitchen.

Visions of Trees – Sometimes It Kills/No Flag

February 2nd, 2011 § Leave a Comment

I’ve been a fan of Visions of Trees for quite a while now, so it’s nice to see things coming together for them as a band. My laptop is littered with various demos, instrumentals and remixes that have turned up on various blogs over the past year, but things are now becoming a bit more structured for the duo (namely Joni Juden and Sara Atalar). They are set for their first official UK release on February 7th, in the form of tracks ‘Sometimes It Kills’/'No Flag’ (released on Moshi Moshi). ‘Sometimes It Kills’ is my favourite of the two, although my love for ‘No Flag’ is somewhat boosted by the fact that they recently mixed it with TLC’s ‘No Scrubs’ (download below!). Watch the video for ‘Sometimes It Kills’ below, and pre-order the single here.

Memory Tapes – Today Is Our Life (+ AMAZING S.I.C compilation)

January 31st, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Memory Tapes have been away for far too long. Dayve Hawk has been busy doing who knows what (hopefully mainly making more delicious music), and whilst the remixes posted to his blog have somewhat filled the void, it’s nice to have him back in his own right. ‘Today Is Our Life’ is a track taken from his as yet untitled second album, the follow up to Seek Magic (which is still one of my favourite LPs of the past few years). The track is instantly recognizable as being Memory Tapes, whilst still sounding completely fresh. Hawk’s vocals are like an old friend, guiding us through a 5 minute long dream that at first dawdles, and then becomes full of energy as guitar parts are layered over synths, keys, drums….too many parts to name. Half the fun of Seek Magic was trying to guess what the hell all the sounds were, and here the game continues. Welcome back Memory Tapes. We missed you. (You can get the mp3 here at GvsB)

The track comes via the Something In Construction compilation Love Sic Disco. SIC are celebrating their 100th release by giving away a fricking awesome compilation for free via The Guardian. It features tracks from ANR, Loney Dear, MNDR and Houses amongst others. WOW. Go here to download it, or stream via the Soundcloud player below.

Savage Skulls & Douster – Bad Gal (feat. Robyn)

January 31st, 2011 § Leave a Comment

Savage Skulls are a Swedish electronic duo, and Douster is a producer who hails from Lyon, France. They have come together to release ‘Bad Gal’ on the Mad Decent label, with vocals coming courtesy of the always mind-blowing Robyn. The official video was released recently, watch it below. The track features beats that will burrow into your head, accompanied by electronics that fall somewhere between sounds you’d find in a video-game and a jungle. Sounds peculiar but it’s energetic and fun; Savage Skulls & Douster produce a sound that manages to be their own, whilst still maintaining the energy and feel of the music that has come to represent Mad Decent. Listen to the track, and you’ll be singing “Bad gal, oh oh” all day long.
